What Scope 1 Covers

Scope 1 covers direct greenhouse gas emissions from sources a company owns or controls — boilers, furnaces, kilns, vehicle fleets, process reactions and refrigerant losses.

It is the part of the footprint an organization is fully accountable for. There is no supplier to ask and no allocation to negotiate: the emissions happen inside your own boundary.

It is also the foundation every other scope is built on. The boundary decisions, data governance and verification practice established here determine whether Scope 2 and Scope 3 hold up.
